Although he tries to help the lovers, his actions lead to their suffering. In one drama only did he represent ideal love brought to a tragic doom without a hint of inner severance. The atmosphere of the play is created largely by the sustained use of the dream metaphor, and the ending is marked by the repeated idea of awakening.

Shakespeare certainly did not, so far as we can judge, regard sexual love like some moderns as either the clue to human life or as in any way related to the structure of the universe.
One recurring quality in the play is how perceptive the other characters are to the events going on around them; nothing seems to go unnoticed. A girl of humble birth, in love with a young noble who scorns her, to set herself, notwithstanding, to win him, and to succeed.
Though classed by the Folio editors hesitatingly it would seem with the Tragedies, this play seems to set at nought the whole scheme of Shakesperean tragedy. His survival could suggest that better nature has not been completely extinguished, by the gods of evil, as he is still alive, if the gods of evil had prevailed, he might not have made it to the end of the play, Shakespeare has clearly chosen to do this purposefully, to make the tragedy less tragic.
By my soul I swear There is no power in the tongue of man To alter me. Orlando is showing impatience with the charade, and needs more tangible reassurance: But the finer instincts of his ripening art gradually restricted its scope. Nor is he, if we mean by this that he thinks or speaks of Love in the transcendent way of Dante, or Lucretius, or Spenser, or Shelley.
